Well, it's Christmas time, so maybe it's a good time to ask this, while we're making our lists to Santa ...

A recent reference to the 2/5/78 TOO, which is on DP 18 (which I don't have), made me wonder: What would folks recommend as their Essential DPs or Other Official Releases? (Post-canonical album era.) I'm a perfectly loyal customer of DPs/RTs etc., but have to confess I don't have Every Single One, and I know I'm missing some good stuff.

One official release that never seems to leave my iPod is Live at the Fillmore East, 2/11/69. (Put it on your list to Santa if you don't have it yet!) What are some others that forumites really love and see as a "don't miss"?

Notice how this is mostly pre Brent ! I hope some of our fans of the post Keith eras would chime in ( the RT2, 1 MSG Sept 90, or "Night fall of Diamonds, for instance ). I like the Cow Palace 12/31/76 , and To Terrapin , Hartford 77 sets .
If Santa was a real swell guy, he'd get you the Winterland 73 box, and if he was REAL swell ,he find you a copy of that Filmore West 69 box !
I guess it is "season to taste" . I mostly line up with what has been said . I like 76, so I will throw in a vote for DP 20 (9/25-928) .

I agree that at least one Bruce show or compilation is "essential" - the 09/90 RT is a great choice.

Don't overlook Dick's Picks 28. Fantastic stuff. I've been on a '73 bender since I heard it for the first time couple months ago.

My longtime favourites have been

1
3
4
10
14
20

I have to agree that 19 is definetly one if not the best as well.

As for other OR must haves

2/11/69 of course
Ladies and Gentlemen
Hundred year hall
Steppin' out

One thing on my list this year is the Winterland '73 box set. I've wanted it for a while now but havent been able to afford it. I made sure santa got my list this year though as I made 500 copies and mailed them all at Macy's.

DP 19 is my fav. For value you can't go wrong with Vol 29 six discs 5-19-77+5-21-77(-US Blues)+ some bonus tracks from 10-11-77. A couple road trips that no one mentioned are Vol 3#2 11-15-71 + Vol 2#3 Wall of Sound.

Obviously this list could be expanded to infinity, but this is my (relatively)short list of "essential" DP/RT/Vault releases (Note that I have not included box sets such as the Complete Fillmore '69 and Winterland '73 packages).

I'm sure some folks would take issue with the omission here of such wonderful releases as Rockin' the Rhein, RT v4n1 (Big Rock PowWow) and Steppin' Out with Grateful Dead, and make no mistake- those are all GREAT choices that I know and love as much as anyone. However, the recordings below are the ones I personally feel absolutely MUST be included in any comprehensive GD library. So, for what it's worth...

Hundred Year Hall- Frankfurt 4/26/72

Ladies and Gentlemen The Grateful Dead- 4/26-29/71

DP4- Fillmore East 2/13-14/70

DP8- Harpur College 5/2/70

DP10- Winterland 12/29/77

DP12- Boston and Providence, 6/26&28/74

DP14- Boston 11/30 & 12/2/73

DP22- Lake Tahoe 2/23-24/68

DP26- Chicago and Minneapolis 4/26-27/69

One From the Vault- Music Hall, San Fran 8/13/75

Two From The Vault (Expanded Edition)- Shrine Auditorium 8/23-24/68

Road Trips Vol 2 No 2- Carousel, SF 2/14/68

Road Trips Vol 3 No 3- Fillmore East 5/15/70

* Unlike many folks who strongly favor the early years, I do have a selection of Brent-era shows I love (especially from Fall '79 and around '89-'90). However, I must also say that I firmly believe no release from after 1977 qualifies as "essential" Grateful Dead. From this point on, even the hottest shows were pretty much just recycled versions of high points reached during the glory days.

A couple outside the DP series that are worth having are 'Three from the vault' - 18/2/71 Portchester (good show but not quite as good as the previous night) and 'To Terrapin' - 28/5/77 Hartford (great show from a great period).

I cant believe how many of you want MORE`70s GD....invest in Sirius/XM radio...and you will have all the `70s GD music you can listen to!!..no need to buy anymore CD`s,no more downloads...its all there!!!....ya`ll make me sick!.....They need tp put out"12/28/91Oakland"....and"10/1/94Boston"and"10/5/94Boston..(or is it MSG?)...you see, there is hoardes of 1970`s GD music that has been released so far....most all of it is 70`s or early`80s......and even though YOU don`t like the `90s,so of us do,and we find it to be plentiful in exceptianal tunes and shows in there entirity!....

Many of the Dick's Picks volumes are absolutely essential!

I cannot imagine any deadhead not having any of these:

1) 12/19/73
2) 10/31/71 perhaps the greatest thematic jamming in the bands history
3) 5/22/77
4) 2/13-14/70
8) 5/2/70 one of the bands greatest performances of all time
12) 6/26,28/74
14) 11/30 and 12/2/73
15) 9/3/77 Englishtown
16) 11/8/69
19) 10/19/73 quite possibly the greatest of all the DP's
22) 2/23-24/68 wild '68 playing in vault remastered sound
24) 3/23/74
30) 3/25,28/72 cool Bo Diddley set
31) 8/4,5,6/74
36) 9/21/72 definitive Dark Star> Dew

I wasn't aware that owning "Dick's Picks" was a pre-requisite to being classified as a Deadhead. Seems odd since I believe, if I remember history correctly, the Grateful Dead pre-dated Dick's Picks by about 28 years. What were all those fans before the release of the first DP in 1993?

Of course, I'm just "bustin' yer chops" Cliff. Sometimes I can't help myself. Merry Christmas to you and yours brother.

I do have some of those. So I guess I still get to keep my Deadhead card. Unless the real test is whether you cry at the fate of all sentient beings :-)

This thread had some more thoughts on the Feb '78 DP:
http://www.archive.org/post/149465/dicks-picks-12-or-18

(The May '78 DP is one that I consider NOT essential, although some people like those shows.)

I'd probably be more expansive in my list today, as I fall more in the "get it all" category...very few of the official live releases within my 'era' are ones I'd want to skip, and 'complete show' is not a factor for me.

I like those shows. Non-essential, for sure, but 5-11-78 was a tape I got early on in my tape-collecting days, and I always enjoyed it for the drunken hoot factor. 5-10 is a well-played but unexceptional show and I believe it was included mainly for contrast - to show what an oddity 5-11 is, that they weren't doing THAT every night. 5-11 still always makes me laugh, and I like that.
